We usually have Purple Finches and Pine Siskins only when it snows and then
only a couple of each - this has been the pattern for the 18 years we have
lived here. But this winter they have exploded in number as you can see
from the attached photo that shows a few of them on the porch. When the snow
came we had two hanging open feeders and one feeder with slots on the bottom
but we moved a table and erected an umbrella over it Now we are seeing 40-50
feeding there in addition to the ones eating at the yard feeders and on the
ground under the feeders. We are putting out so much sunflower seed that a
40 pound bag is just lasting a few days, but we don't mind because seeing
these beautiful little birds is worth the cost.
