Maury Co. Jan. 19, 2009 After seeing the bird on Saturday without my wife, this Monday morning I took Bonnie down to view the Snowy Owl near Spring Hill, TN. We arrived about 8 am and slowly drove south of the Route 31 - Saturn Pkwy intersection, checking the fields on the west side of the road. After looking at two inanimate white objects, we stopped at a spot just south of where the off ramp from the west intersects Route 31. There Bonnie spotted the owl sitting in the field to the left of the large barn. We got excellent but distant views of the owl, who seemed rather unconcerned about the distant interest, although it did look our way from time to time. A road behind on Saturn property behind the owl produced a fellow in a truck who stopped for a while as well. As we watched it, other birders began to trickle in, and it seemed like a family get together with Mark Greene, Gary Casey, Jim and Sharon Hiett arriving shortly after we saw the bird. As we prepared to leave a local fellow in a truck arrived. He said people in a nearby store had mentioned it to him, so I told him a bit about the bird and its unusual appearance here. Bonnie and I ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel and returned briefly at 9:30 am to find 7-8 cars at the same spot. In checking with Mark and Gary, the bird had not moved from ground roost in the intervening period. Thanks to all who got the word out about this special bird.
