Nov. 3, 2007 Mississippi River, Ensley Bottoms - TN Wapanocca? NWR - AR An early morning visit on the river, saw many pods of Coots with a few Ruddy, Gadwal and Shovelers. A Peregrine had set up watch on Dacus Bar and an immature and adult Bald Eagles took long baths on the head of Loosahatchie Bar. In the afternoon the pods of Coots had joined into three?groups with over 250 birds. Only 21 Ruddy and 5 Gadwall were seen along with 4 Great Blue, 1 Great Egret and 12 DC Cormorants. Two Red-tailed Hawks and a single Sharp-shinned were the only afternoon raptors there. Only 4 Ring-billed Gulls seen on the two visits.? Ensley held no surprises with about 1,000 Least including Snowflake, 2 Dunlin, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, Killdeer, and 3 reclusive?Wilson's Snipe. Another Sharp-shinned soared over (this has been the week for Sharpie movement with their numbers equaling Coop's) with both eastern and western Red-tails and at least a half dozen Kestrel. At TVA Lake, there were 9 species of waterfowl including 3 Redhead, DC Cormorants, Pied-bill Grebe, Great Egrets and 6 Ring-billed Gulls. On McKellar Lake, there was a single FRANKLIN'S GULL along with 21 Ring-billed and an adult Herring Gull. ??? Wapanocca NWR was a great show with 3 Harrier, 2 Red-tailed Hawks and 3 Bald Eagles?keeping everything alert.?The Harriers were seeking out their favored Green-winged Teal while Red-tails looking for just anything unwary and the two immature Bald Eagles hunting Coots while an adult soared in and out of view. I had great fun watching and photographing the youngsters wading around trying to sneak up on an?unwary Coot and then fight over the meal with the larger female taking the prize from the more adept hunter, the?smaller male. ?Only 12 species of waterfowl but huge numbers and Wind Bird wise I had; Killdeer,?3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 19 Greater, Least, Dunlin and 30+ LB Dowitchers. Another Sharpie soared over for photos. Jeff R. Wilson Ol'Coot / TLBA Bartlett, TN ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together.
