Since it was relatively cool today (88º), I walked to the end of Meander Lake, which is located behind the fish ponds, to see if the kites had begun their annual gathering before migration. There were only 14 kites visible roosting in the trees, but several more including at least one juvenile were observed circling above. If the past, as many as 50-60 have been seen in the area. It is a little early, but it is worth a trip to see the kites having what appears to be a great time. Virginia Reynolds Memphis Shelby County Meander Lake is shown in the D-4 block of the Shelby Farms map in the back membership booklet of the MTOS.
