Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area, Nov. 19, 2006 S. Mt. Juliet Rd. in eastern Davidson Co. at the junction of Rutherford and Wilson counties page 53 D7 in DeLorme TN atlas Sarah Scott and I went out about noon today to check on the Merlin and found it in the back part of the area. It was perched, but not in the same tree as yesterday and would not allow a close approach. All slate gray back and some rufous showing on sides (no good front views seen) indicate a male. Possibly this bird will stay for the winter. The area is aprox. 200 acres dedicated to preserving Tn Coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis) and other limestone glade endemics. Grassy fields, open limestone glades and E. Red Cedar thickets which under gray skies like today might resemble a northern Manitoba muskeg.
