On this lovely, cold and dreary day, I got to Melton Hill Park in west Knox County at around 12:20 pm and first drove to the boat ramp on the right. My day could not have begun more auspiciously as the first two birds I saw were an adult Bald Eagle and a Common Loon. While I've seen eagles here before, I have never seen much in the way of waterfowl and definitely no loons. A while later, while walking the grassy path through one of the meadows a Winter Wren popped up right in front of me, perched briefly and then took cover. Another first here for me. Not many birds showing themselves but I certainly can't complain. I stopped by the pond at Pellissippi State hoping something interesting may have joined the lesser scaup but the scaup was alone; not even any Canada Geese. Carole Gobert Knoxville
