The Bristol Bird Club has a Birding field trip to Panhandle Rd (Carter County -
~1800’ to 3850’ elevation) and USFS Rd 52 along the ridge top of the Holston
Mountain Chain to Holston High Knob along the border of Sullivan / Carter
County (~3850’ to 4150’ elevation). After leaving the Panhandle Rd area we
ventured to the Beaver Dam Watershed of lower Shady Valley and successfully
found a Swainson’s Warbler on its breeding grounds across the road from Beaver
Dam Creek in the rhododendrons. We unsuccessfully looked for the Prothonotary
Warbler reported earlier at Jacob’s Creek Campground. It was a good day with 65
species of bird identified. Lots of high elevation specialties - Least
Flycatcher, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, Veery, Blue-headed Vireo, and Canada Warbler. We had a Prairie
Warbler about half way up Panhandle Rd which might be a straggling migrant but
not sure.
