Subject: [TN-Bird] Long-eared Owl Roost in Dyer County
Daniel Redwine recently located a Long-eared Owl daytime roosting location in
Dyer County that he had suspected for some time but hadn’t confirmed until now.
There are up to four owls roosting regularly at this one location.
For sensetive species like Long-eared Owl the general rule of thumb is “don’t
tell anyone and don’t post it anywhere” with good reason. Flushing these owls
from the roost only a few times will result in the owls moving out of the area
completely.
However, we know there are quite a few birders in TN who haven’t yet seen a
Long-Eared Owl and think we may have worked out a protocol for viewing these
birds that will be satisfactory for the viewers and won’t unnecessarily stress
the owls. We will schedule several trips over the next few weeks where one of
us (Daniel Redwine, Victor Stoll or myself) will guide those interested to the
location where the owls can be viewed by scope from a safe distance. (The
purpose of these trips is not photography and the conditions won’t be ideal for
good photos. If you are a photographer who’s inclined to keep going closer for
better photos then don’t come at all!)
On days when there’s an owl trip scheduled we will have someone check the
roost early in the morning with the possibility of canceling the trip should
the owls not be in a good location. This will potentially save some people a
long drive for a wasted trip.
Hopefully the owls will cooperate and all who want to will finally get the
opportunity to see a real Long-eared Owl. Thanks to Daniel Redwine for doing a
great job on the scouting!

schedule or contact Victor Stoll or Daniel Redwine.
