I haven’t seen this posted here yet.
A Limpkin was found and photographed at the Duck River Unit this
afternoon October 25th by Iris Kilpatrick. This is a first County record
and the first chasable one in the State in many years.
The location is at the traditional heron island roost watch site a
quarter mile up Lawrence Creek Road. You need to walk in the levee behind
the yellow gates on the right for several hundred feet to where it opens up
on the right and you can see out over the Duck River mudflats.
The bird is shy and will easily retreat into the woods for some time when
disturbed but has always returned to the muddy near shore to search for
mussels etc. when things quiet down. It was seen off and on throughout the
afternoon.
Thanks to Iris for getting the word out and good luck to those who try
for it tomorrow! Sounds like it can stay out of sight for quite a while.
