A handsome Lincoln's Sparrow singing his full song from a walnut twig in our front yard in western Lewis County today (5/02/07) was a treat. For those who are unfamiliar with it, their song reminds me of a House Wren that took music lessons. Other songbird migrants are present, but the numbers of some seem low still. Many boreal nesters are in especially short supply: Tennessee, Magnolia, Blackpoll Warblers are only trickling through, and I have yet to see a Nashville Warbler or Philadelphia Vireo at all. I'm hoping that they are not really missing but just take a look down at dawn, see our brown forests, and decide to keep flying in search of better habitat. There are finally more signs of forest recovery (second spring, as it were...): Oaks are breaking new buds and showing fresh green, and lightning bugs have reappeared for the first time since the freeze.
