More about the Brown-headed Nuthatch from the Buffalo River CBC
yesterday -- this bird was found by me in an area south of Highway
64, not far from the Natchez Trace, and close to the Wayne County
line. This is the second time I have encountered this species in
Lawrence County in recent years; the first was near Loretto on a
Breeding Bird survey route. Lawrence County has a lot of territory
and only a few observers who cover it regularly, so it is hard to
know if these birds are just wanderers from Alabama or the vanguard
of a new, very small breeding population. It seems inevitable that
they will colonize the southern and western Highland Rim in TN
eventually, MAYBE these birds are the very beginning of this process??
