Hello all, We're visiting my folks for the holidays in Knoxville, and yesterday (12/25) my father mentioned a large flock of crows out back by Bearden Elementary School. I went out on the deck in my socks and started counting around 4:45pm as the crows came in twos, threes, sixes, dozens and scores, all headed north-northwest. I counted for about 30 minutes, and about every ten minutes someone would stick their head out and ask if I was cold (I was) and how many I was up to. 250... 485... 1225... eventually counting 2,936 AMERICAN CROWS, and I'm quite sure I missed a lot because they were already coming over by the time I started. So today my father and I started a little earlier (4:30pm) and tried to find a spot with a better view of the sky. Today the crows were coming from the west (Bearden Hill area) and flying northeast. We didn't see quite as many as yesterday but still ended up with an astonishing 2,446 crows by 5:25pm. I think there were more but the line of flight started drifting northwest toward Northshore Dr and I-40, becoming too low behind the trees to see. As we stood looking up at the crows one flew directly overhead and called - a distinctive nasal "ca-aw" of a FISH CROW. This is about 1.4 miles from the 4th Creek WTP and Lakeshore Mental Health Institute where Fish Crows have been found before. I don't know much about crow roosts - do Fish Crows and American Crows ever roost together? Does anyone know where the crow roost in west Knox County is? It must be massive. In other birds, I found a Fox Sparrow at Turkey Creek Wetlands this morning and up to 4 Brown-headed Nuthatches at Louisville Point in Blount County last week. Another fellow told us about two nearby Great Egrets where Miser Station Rd crosses Lackey Creek, so we stopped and were able to see them north of the bridge. Merry Christmas and happy New Year! Look me up if you are in Tucson.
