A great day in my west Knox County yard after a bad start to the morning. Couldn't get back to sleep after twice cleaning up cat vomit from the carpet around 3 a.m. Woke up after 10 and my electricity was off. Went out on the back deck to count birds without my morning coffee. Things were dead for about half an hour with only 7 common species found. Then the electricity came back on, I made a pot of coffee and things really picked up in the yard. I ended up counting for nearly 2 hours; every time I'd think of going inside something new would show up. First there was the Brown Creeper, then a Red-breasted Nuthatch (both in the wild cherry tree where the suet feeder is hanging, though neither of these species went for the suet.) A bit later a female or immature Purple Finch on the sunflower seed feeder. (I've never had more than one Purple Finch at a time) All three were FOS for me. A Blue-headed Vireo (new yard bird) put in a brief appearance in the pine tree as did two Red-winged Blackbirds. The vireo and a Black Vulture were both new yard birds for me. Flocks of robins flew around the neighborhood. In all, 27 species.... not a high count, you might think, but probably the most I've ever found from the yard. 10:50 a.m. - 1 pm Black Vulture 1 Mourning Dove 5 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Downy Woodpecker 2 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Blue Jay 3 American Crow 7 Carolina Chickadee 2 Tufted Titmouse 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Brown Creeper 1 Carolina Wren 1 Eastern Bluebird 1 American Robin 50 Northern Mockingbird 2 Brown Thrasher 1 Cedar Waxwing 4 Eastern Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-throated Sparrow 4 Northern Cardinal 3 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Common Grackle 1 Purple Finch 1 House Finch 7 American Goldfinch 5 This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org Carole Gobert, Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
