Spent another delightful afternoon trudging around Kingston Steam Plant in
Roane County, Tenn. Sat., 1/12/08, from 1:20 to 4:50 pm A beautiful adult RED
SHOULDERED HAWK posed cooperatively in a tree close by for 5 minutes or more,
sometimes looking right at me and deciding that I was harmless. Seven sleepy
COMMON GOLDENEYES drifted down the river occasionally raising their heads.
Sixteen huge black birds flew low overhead toward the trees across Swan Pond
Road (DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS but what a sight!). Later spotted 6 in the
river on the back side of the ponds. And those comical, jaunty looking HOODED
MERGANSERS kept popping up just about everywhere; they're skittish and keep
moving around making it devilishly had to count them, so I just counted the
largest concentration on the large pond (where there had been just 29 an hour
or so earlier). This is what I counted: Canada Goose 19Gadwall 1

field pond)Common Goldeneye 7 (2 M, 5 F)Hooded Merganser
