Saturday was a beautiful day for a leisurely stroll around the Kingston Steam Plant in Roane County. It not being shore bird season, I was the only birder there. I did encounter two fishermen leaving as I arrived in the afternoon. Only shore bird was the requisite lone great blue heron present on just about every body of water in east Tennessee. There was also a flotilla of coots (easily more than 20). mallards, palm warblers, song sparrows and a meadow full of Eastern meadowlarks. As I was leaving around 5:30 or so, I noticed a hawk hunting the meadows to either side of the road leading from the parking lot. It stuck around long enough for me to get some really good close looks at it, even perching briefly low in the meadow. An immature northern harrier. It left and came back a couple of times and I managed to snap a couple of quick photos of it in the air. What a beautiful bird. I returned late Sunday hoping for some better shots but the harrier didn't show. (I forget to say that Saturday in the stand of pines back near the recreation area I found a brown headed nuthatch flitting around in a pine right next to the water along with a palm warbler and Carolina chickadees.)
