Nice overcast afternoon at the Kingston Steam Plant settling ponds in Roane County, TN. We birded from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon (8/11/06). There were not many birds but a few interesting ones. Most of the shorebirds seen were on the large eastern-most upper pond. The Black Tern was on the western edge of the western-most lower pond. The plant is actively dredging the very large lower western pond so the water levels of the ponds are fluctuating affecting the mud flats and shoreline. Interesting note on the Black Tern. A birding friend in Central Mississippi had called me the day before that he had just seen four Black Tern there. 1. Great Egret - 3 2. Snowy Egret - 2 3. Great Blue Heron - 1 4. Little Blue Heron - 2 immature 5. Black-crowned Night-Heron - 1 6. Wood ducks - 7 7. Ringed-neck Duck - 1 8. Mallards - 12+ 9. Canada Goose - 25+ 10. Osprey - 1 11. Kestrel - 1 12.
