It is with regret that I report the loss of Kenneth Walkup. He died last night
after being disabled for a few years due to strokes. He was a faithful member
of the Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society, having
served as the immediate past Treasurer of NTOS. He assisted with all the NTOS
seasonal bird counts for many years in the Warner Park section. He was
faithful even on a Christmas bird count morning when it was minus 9 degrees,
remembering, "They do the Christmas counts in Canada when it is a lot colder
than this". His late wife Sarah had led the Warner Park bird counts for a few
years. They had together enjoyed many birding trips across the country and
internationally. Kenneth was a Navy veteran of World War II. He had no
children. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in law and accounting and
spent most of his career as a CPA in the Business Office of the Metro Nashville
Board of Education. After his retirement, he traveled extensively, eventually
visiting all seven continents, including Antarctica. He had been the church
Treasurer at Antioch United Methodist Church for over 25 years and taught an
adult Sunday School class there for many years. He was an intellectual, a
gentleman, a Christian, and a lover of birds.
