9/11/09 KY Lake areas of Henry & Benton Co I spent a few hours this morning on my 1st foray of the fall to KY Lake. Shorebirds were very scarce, only 7 species. Highlights were a juv. Short-billed Dowitcher and Semi Sandpiper at the Lick Creek flats in Benton Co. Flats are still pretty scarce anywhere, but should improve quickly as the lake drops. Ring-billed Gulls were very numerous, over 750 between Pace Point and the island at Paris Landing. Numerous Herring Gulls and a single Laughing Gull at Pace Point were the other gulls. Hoped for my 1st Lesser Black-backed of the season, but not today. Caspian Terns were very numerous as well, with a handful of Forster's around. Passerine migration was very slow, though quality made up for quantity. My ONLY warbler was a gorgeous male Golden-winged which allowed me decent photos. An Olive-sided Flycatcher along the levee in the Big Sandy bottom was the highlight of the day. I will post a few photos at some point (imagine that). Good Birding!!
