On Sunday morning, nine birders visited Kyker Bottoms in southwestern Blount County (south of Knoxville). Temperatures ranged from about 18 to 36 degrees, with occassional snow flurries. We were there from 8:15 until some time before noon. There is a lot of water there - should be great for ducks over the next few weeks. While there are plenty of sparrows there, the number seems lower than in recent years at this time. No unusual species were found. No shrike was found. One is often there in winter. A nice find were at least two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERs, which used to be fairly regular there, but haven't been during the past 2-3 years or more.
