I am finally able to get around to sending the results of last Sunday's (March 12) field trip by the Knoxville Chapter of TOS to Wood Thrush Ridge, the home of member Janet McKnight. (Please see http://www.ohiobirds.org/blog/blog.php?/archives/50-The-Hills-of-Tennessee.html for more information about this site) At least 17 people spent time from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. walking, lounging, socializing and enjoying the views and birds on and near her property - plus sharing in a wonderful pot-luck lunch. The day was so good we plan to do another like it on April 9, to see what kind of early spring migration she has there. We found at least 48 bird species there, including one RED-TAILED HAWK sitting on a nest, and another one bringing a pine branch to a tree on the other side of the property. A few lucky attendees got to see a GREAT HORNED OWL flying. We all had great looks to compare HOUSE and PURPLE FINCHes. WILD TURKEY was heard from the top of the hill. Both SHARP-SHINNED and COOPER'S HAWKs flew past - this could prove to be a good vantage point for hawk migration. Here's the bird list: Wood Duck Wild Turkey Great Blue Heron Black Vulture Turkey Vulture Sharp-shinned Hawk Cooper's Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Mourning Dove Great Horned Owl Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Pileated Woodpecker Eastern Phoebe Blue Jay American Crow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren Winter Wren Golden-crowned Kinglet Ruby-crowned Kinglet Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher European Starling Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Song Sparrow Swamp Sparrow White-throated Sparrow White-crowned Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal Red-winged Blackbird Eastern Meadowlark Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird Purple Finch House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow Number of Species: 48 David Trently Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation.
