The Bristol Bird Club announced Tuesday night that the joint annual spring meeting of the Tennessee Ornithological Society and the Virginia Society of Ornithology will be held at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Johnson City TN the weekend of 18-19-20 May 2012. It is sponsored and hosted by BBC. Johnson City is located just south of the Virginia stateline in Northeast Tennessee. Members voted unanimously to authorize the club's leadership to enter a contract agreement for the event with the Holiday Inn management . Venue Committee Chairwoman Wilma Boy brought the motion to the floor at the BBC October meeting. The BBC Venue Committee for the joint state meeting, has been busy working with the project for three months. Committee members met twice to plan needs and work on details. Visits were made to a number of appropriate facilities in Abingdon, Bristol, Kingsport and Johnson City to survey sites, photograph rooms, parking, access, overnight accommodations, banquet rooms requirements and to meet and discuss the meeting and needs with hotel managers. Committee members canvassed areas including Boones Creek, Tri-City Airport and facilities along I-81 and I-26. Locations such as East Tennessee State University, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center at Abingdon, Martha Washington Inn, Northeast State Community College and the Natural History Museum and Visitor Center at the Gray Fossil Site were considered. It finally came down to the Holiday Inn Convention Center at Johnson City, the Millennium Conference Center in Johnson City and the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center at Kingsport. The Virginia Society of Ornithology Board of Directors consented to a location in the Tri-Cities metro area of Northeast Tennessee so that a large facility with enough staff, banquet facilities and hotel rooms could be secured. The Holiday Inn, which was extensively renovated in February 2008, won out hands down with the Venue Committee due to size of banquet facility, no guarantee required for room accommodations, the extremely low extra fees and small deposit. The hotel has 200 rooms. BBC will lease the 11,000-square-foot convention center with its private outside entrance. It is also central to some of the most desirable field trip areas in the 6,000+ foot elevation of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains along the North Carolina line, just east of the Convention Center.
