[TN-Bird] Ibis Robs Little Blue

Mossy Creek Viewing Area, Jefferson County, 7/30/09. 7-8 PM

Leslie and I made our first visit to Mossy Creek and found a nice  
assortment of birds there; oddly, there seemed to be only one of  
everything: one each  wood duck, great egret, little blue heron, green  
heron,  black-crowned night-heron, white ibis, red-tailed hawk,  
spotted sandpiper, chimney swift, belted kingfisher, eastern phoebe,  
and goldfinch.  As far as we could tell, all were juveniles.

The best looks were from the walking trail between two well-designed,  
but  poorly-located viewing structures.  While we were there, we  
witnessed the little blue catching a huge crawfish.  That wader, in  
turn, got mugged by the ibis, who walked off & swallowed the crawdad  
whole.    I was able to photograph the episode; I've posted 12 of the

Also, a photograph of a sorry-looking bald-headed male northern  
cardinal.  I suppose I'd caught him molting:
