Mossy Creek Viewing Area, Jefferson County, 7/30/09. 7-8 PM Leslie and I made our first visit to Mossy Creek and found a nice assortment of birds there; oddly, there seemed to be only one of everything: one each wood duck, great egret, little blue heron, green heron, black-crowned night-heron, white ibis, red-tailed hawk, spotted sandpiper, chimney swift, belted kingfisher, eastern phoebe, and goldfinch. As far as we could tell, all were juveniles. The best looks were from the walking trail between two well-designed, but poorly-located viewing structures. While we were there, we witnessed the little blue catching a huge crawfish. That wader, in turn, got mugged by the ibis, who walked off & swallowed the crawdad whole. I was able to photograph the episode; I've posted 12 of the images online: http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/mossy_creek&page=1 Also, a photograph of a sorry-looking bald-headed male northern cardinal. I suppose I'd caught him molting: http://www.pbase.com/image/115577473/original Michael Sledjeski Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
