Tennessee Ornithological Society officers and members:

The House of Representatives recently passed a version of the Fiscal Year
2016 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies bill with an amendment
by Representative Duncan (South Carolina) that would prohibit the Department
of Justice from enforcing the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).

The Senate version of this bill was passed out of the full Senate
Appropriations Committee Wednesday afternoon without any amendments. The
Senate FY 2016 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies bill will
now proceed to the floor for full consideration by the Senate very soon. It
is possible that there will be a companion to Representative Duncan's
amendment offered on the Senate floor. Now would be a good time to contact
your Senators. If you wish, use the following link:

to tell them to vote NO on any such amendments that may come up when this
bill is called to the floor.

Here is what you will see at the link above but you must go to that link and
not attempt to use this photo reproduction.

One of the oldest environmental laws in our country, the Migratory Bird
Treaty Act (MBTA),

is coming under attack by Members of Congress. This week, the House of
Representatives

passed a provision in a fiscal appropriations bill that would bar the
Department of Justice from

enforcing the MBTA - essentially declaring that it's open season on birds!

The MBTA is the primary piece of legislation in the United States
established to protect

over 1,000 species of migratory birds (like this Baltimore Oriole, pictured)
and makes

it illegal to harm these birds except under very specific circumstances. If
this measure is

adopted by the United States Senate, it could result in the harm and or
death of millions

of birds with no consequences for perpetrators.

We need you to ACT NOW:

Tell your Senators to stand up and fight for birds
by protecting the Migratory Bird Treaty Act!
