We have shared the same questions as the person who posted last week about the lack of hummingbirds this year. A few stopped by but only 4 have remained for the past several weeks. All this changed this week as more began arriving on Monday and the numbers have increased daily. We now can count 20-25 around our feeders at almost any time of the day; since we've been told there are at least twice as many not seen at any one moment, that would mean 60-75 beautiful Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in our yard. We grew so impatient about their arrival but looking back at our records revealed they were not that late in coming to our yard on the Hill; numbers are down, however, as last year we had over 200 by this time. I suppose we just enjoy hearing and seeing them so much it is difficult to wait.
