A group consisting of Lloyd and Cathy Swant with Ruth
Luckado in one boat and Dale and Jeannie Swant with
yours truly in another boat conducted a careful count
of the herons, etc., at the Little Elder Island
(Franklin County) roost yesterday evening, Sept. 9.

While Lloyd's boat anchored east of the island, Dale's
was southwest and contact was maintained via family
channel radio, to minimize the threat of double
counting.

Fortunately, most birds coming to roost (5:30-7:30
p.m. EDT) did so from either easterly or southerly
directions, making for a clear division of labor
between the counting groups. Also fortunate was the
fact that most groups of either of the most easily
confused individuals, immature Cattle Egrets and
Little Blue Herons, were of a single species, often
led by adults.

We were all stunned by the final tally:

801 Cattle Egrets
46 Great Egrets
41 Little Blue Herons, just 4(!) of which were adults.
9 Green Herons
1 Black-crowned Night-Heron
1 Great Blue Heron

Apparently most of the Night-Herons and many of the
adult Little Blues seen on previous trips had left the
area, as had the immature White Ibis.

Also seen while we were on the water were 16 Black
Terns, 13 Forster's Terns, 1 Caspian Tern, 2 Ospreys,
4 Cormorants, 33 Blue-winged Teal, 35 Canada Geese, 8
Mallards and many Tree Swallows.

It has been my very great fortune to find an incredibly wonderful bird.
