The hooded crane was seen at about 10:35 this morning and again at about 2:15 p.m. at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood. VERY large numbers of sandhill cranes were also in view. Maybe they like this "fowl" weather! (I know cranes aren't 'fowl,' but you needed to smile didn't you?) Hopefully the hooded crane will be visible during the Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival this coming Saturday and Sunday. The festival headquarters will be at Birchwood Elementary School. Shuttle buses will take you to the HWR because parking will NOT be allowed there, except for handicap parking. Shuttle buses will also go to the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park. Buses will run about every 15 minutes all day. Some out-of-staters still need help with directions to the HWR. A really good description of how to get there can be found at: http://www.tnwatchablewildlife.org/watchareadetails.cfm?uid=09071608273977728®ion=Hiwassee_Refuge&statearea=East_Tennessee Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
