Few sandhill cranes were active at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge viewing area in Meigs Co. at Birchwood today. However, a few thousand were seen early in the day from the overlook at the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park. They had roosted overnight on mudflats near Hiwassee Island. One whooping crane was among the sandhills. Four immature bald eagles were observed feeding on a dead sandhill crane at the HWR viewing area. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
