April 29, 2004 Ensley Bottoms, Shelby Co. TN My yard this morning was bustling with warblers and vireos so. The winds were whipping out of the south So I figured there might be some new birds at Ensley and as most of you know I'd rather look at birds than eat. The trip paid off big time as the yellowlegs numbers were back up in the high hundreds (with more Greater than before), Semipalmated Plovers numbered near half a hundred, Least and Pectoral numbers had soared. Still only 2 Semipalmated and 1 Western hiding among the horde. I didn't have enough time to do the numbers justice but did pull out some good birds. Both Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers were seen with 8 LB dropping in as I left. The best bird was an early White-rumped Sandpiper which I picked up way out in one pit, first by its gizz and then with some good photos showing the ID points as it fed, too tilted for Baird's for one. The wind was too much for the Painted Buntings to duel and the Bald Eagle STILL SETS EGGS. There is a front moving through Memphis now and rain for Saturday so a smorgasbord is set for a weekend feast. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
