I thought I would reply to the whole list incase there are others interested in seeing the scoters. This afternoon (2/24/14) I had 68 White-winged along with a single Black Scoter from the Vincent Road boat ramp (up river from the dam). I drove at breakneck speed to Hiawasee, where I saw a very nice compliment of your normal southeastern United States songbird (Red-bellied Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebird, Carolina Chickadee, etc.). Before I even went to the refuge, I thought a nice flock of 30 Sandhill Cranes right on the edge of Highway 60. While standing in the parking lot of the refuge, I had a few more fly overhead. The number of cranes was not large, but I love those birds so much that I had a good time. However, I did not see any Whooping Cranes. I actually drove out there last night, straight from the airport, but by the time I got there, it was too dark. If I were to return there today or tomorrow at 5 or 6 p.m. In the evening, would that be the right time to see large flocks of cranes, possibly including whooping cranes? Tom Miko (temporarily in Chattanooga) PS: last night my first stop was at Chickamauga Dam, where I was not able to find a good spot to find WW Scoters. I stopped and parked at different places there and all I saw were PB Grebes. Any suggestions? I did see what looked like a flock of black colored ducks out in the middle of the water that probably scoters, but there was no safe, practical place to park and look at them.
