Henslow's Sparrow is a declining and elusive species high on many birders wish list. It is known for nesting in loose colonies, and one of the most accessible sites in the US occurs in middle Tennessee. The birds can usually even be heard and seen without leaving the vehicle, which is very convenient for the physically challenged. Birds have been faithful to this site for several years, and should continue to nest here, as the location is treated by the state as a wildlife management area. From I-24 in Manchester, take exit #114 (Hwy41) proceed south one mile and go east on Asbury Road. In about 4 miles, turn north on Hickerson Road. The road goes through a large sod farm and then makes a right angle turn left followed by another right angle turn right. At the second turn, there is a brown sign indicating "The Barrens WMA", and a parking area. The birds can be found on both sides of the road for the next 400 yards or so. A tape is not needed and indeed the birds seem to ignore recordings. With a little patience, they are easy to observe, as they tend to sit up in the open and sing their rather feeble song. A scope will be helpful for better views and/or photography.
