4/5/09
southwest Henry Co

I spent a few hours this morning checking my regular route, just northeast
of McKenzie. This is my 1st birding to amount to anything in TN since
mid-January, and was very welcome.Nothing at all unexpected, but did get
great looks at some of our nesting warblers, which were back in force.
Highlights: (FOY) is my First of the Year sightings for a species

Broad-winged Hawk: (FOY) adult high overhead
Yellow-throated Vireo: (FOY) heard only
Fish Crow: several
Barn Swallows: (FOY), having already had Martin, Tree, and Rough-winged
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: (FOY) numerous
Hermit Thrush: (2) one was very responsive to playback, coming right into me
for some nice pix, almost too close too focus
Northern Parula: (FOY) numerous, 10+,
Yellow-throated Warbler: (FOY) 5 on the morning
Pine Warbler: numerous
Black-and-white Warbler: (FOY) one male in one of my regular spots
Prothonotary Warbler: (FOY) heard-only
Louisiana Waterthrush: (FOY) 4
Purple Finch: (3)

I was very disheartened to find several of my areas cut-over since I was
last in the area. One of these cuts right up to the area that has been most
productive for Swainson's Warblers for years now. But, all of the other
breeding warblers of the area are back, hopefully the Swainson's will
return, as there is still some suitable habitat.

If anyone is interested, I've started a new gallery for spring 2009. Nothing
unusual in it yet, but I did get some nice shots of warblers, etc today. The
gallery is http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/spring_2009 , or the 1st image starts

Good Birding; bring those migrants on!
