Henry Co (Pace Point area, Britton Ford, Paris Landing)12/14/2016
I spent about 6 hours yesterday in a very rushed circuit around my old stomping
grounds on KY Lake. Not a lot of interest, that was immediately apparent
anyway, except the overall number of waterfowl. Easily 10,000 Mallards at
Britton Ford, and many waterfowl congregated at both Big Sandy and Britton Ford.
Highlights:
Adult Golden Eagle perched in tree near the overlook, one of the traditional
perches in the area. Only saw it when I first arrived, never again.
Two female Common Mergansers at Britton Ford, in the bay below the house that
overlooks the refuge. They slept 99% of the time.
Red-throated Loon very distant out from Paris Landing. Overall low numbers of
birds at Paris Landing, especially gulls, and surprisingly no Lesser
Black-backed.
Merlin near the town of Henry on the way home, bit of a surprise.
Purple Finches were seen and heard several times, and that is about it.
I've got a couple of checklist links, with a few photos embedded, if anyone is
interested.
