The single Ross' Goose was still present this afternoon (Jan 31 2007) at the headquarters - wildlife loop drive area at Hatchie NWR in Haywood County. It seems to be becoming acclimated to cars, and I was able to approach within 30 feet at one point (from inside my pickup). It was hanging out with the Canada Geese, and was quite easy to spot. In the same area there was a large mixed flock of blackbirds that included good numbers of both Brewer's and Rusty Blackbirds. Yesterday (Jan 30 2007) at Lower Hatchie NWR in Lauderdale County, there was a large congregation of Snow Geese and Greater White- fronted Geese in the ponds below the main Visitor's center overlook. There were roughly 5000 Snow Geese, including around 1000 "Blue" Geese (crude estimates, I didn't even try to actually count!). They were with hundreds of White-fronts and thousands upon thousands of puddle ducks, with several bald eagles spooking the Snow Geese and keeping them airborne much of the time. Quite a sight! All together that made 4 species of Geese in less than 24 hours along the Hatchie corridor. Maybe the cold, snow, and ice to our west and north are finally driving geese our way in numbers? Elsewhere in that part of the state, I found a single Pine Siskin among a flock of American Goldfinches this morning near Covington in Tipton County.
