Today I spent about 2 hours (from 4-6) patrolling Hyatt lane in Cades Cove. There were two northern harriers hunting the open fields on either side of the road for most of the time I was there. One was a very nice adult male. Unfortunately I only caught a fleeting glance of what may have been one of the short-eared owls that have been seen around that area. I spotted it while watching the female harrier. I followed the harrier as she approached the tree line when a smaller bird dive bombed her and began harassing her. It was a fair distance away from me, and light was failing so all I can say for certain was the second bird was visibly smaller (about crow sized) with a very pale underside and fairly uniformly brown on top. It did not have the long tail of an accipiter and it did have the longer wings expected of a short-ear. That brief look was all I got as both birds quickly flew out of view, and the maybe owl never returned. It was just one of those days.
