I had a little time on the afternoon of 20 Feb 13 to stop by the Webb Rd area to scan for the good birds found there recently. The only bird of interest seen from Webb Rd. was a gorgeous nonbreeding plumaged Pacific Loon out in the main channel of the river swimming towards Booker T. Washington State Park. There was also a very dark horned grebe in a bunch of nonbreeding plumaged horneds. I watched the bird for quite a while and couldn't make out any actual colors on the bird due to the crummy lighting, but the size, body shape, head shape, bill size/shape, etc. was right for horned. I guess this bird is transitioning to breeding plumage a little earlier than the others. I also swung out to the boat ramp area of Booker T. Washington SP to look for the Pacific Loon over there (didn't see it again) and found an actual Eared Grebe. There were about 125 Horned Grebes on the lake in a bunch of different groups, plus a few Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, bunches of Bufflehead, plus a few Ruddy Ducks. I didn't actually find any of the target birds I was looking for, but a Pacific Loon and Eared Grebe were a great consolation prize!
