This evening as I was driving along the 218 bypass around Paris I saw five Great Egrets in a flooded field. These were the first I've seen this spring. A couple weeks ago this field had Blue-winged Teal and Northern Shovelers. We noticed this morning that we had large numbers (for us) of hummingbirds at our feeders, which means about 6. We didn't stay home long, however, as I was taking our daughter to a homeschool field day event at Nature Station in Land Between the Lakes... about birds, of course! When we arrived home at about 5:15 there were hummingbirds absolutely swarming the feeders, and some feeders had been emptied. I have never seen this many in the yard before, not even close! I hurriedly mixed more sugar water and put out the rest of the feeders, so that now we have 8 up. But before doing that, I encouraged my 7 year old girl to stand near a feeder, and she delighted in the exciting sensation of all the birds buzzing so near. Tentatively, she held out a finger and then she thrilled as a few different birds landed on it. This was a childhood hobby of mine, but a first for her. I was glad to get pictures and video of her first close encounter. Usually our neighbors have all the hummingbirds, so I wondered if their feeders were empty and that was why we were bombarded. But they arrived home (and presumably would have filled their feeders) over an hour ago and we still have lots of birds, although there are quiet moments between the activity. I just noticed one female hummingbird enjoying the natural nectar from daffodils and periwinkle... I suppose she was tired of that "processed sugar" taste! My husband brought home an oriole feeder yesterday. We haven't seen any takers yet, and I'm wondering if Orchard Orioles like these? We have more Orchards than Baltimores around the yard. Any suggestions for attracting these? I have it right next to our water drip, since I know the orioles come to that. I plan to offer fruit and/or jelly as well.
