I returned to the Grainger County side of Cherokee Dam yesterday, Dec. 31 at around 3:30 p.m. to try again for the Western Grebe & Red-Throated Loons reported by Dean Edwards. This time I was successful in seeing the grebe and one of the loons. Chuck Estes arrived shortly after I did and spotted the loon beyond the small island to the left (north?) of the boat ramp off 375. The Western Grebe was in the same general location where it was seen by others, on the far side of the large island and a bit to the right of it. The viewing conditions were great, it was a nice sunny day and it was especially easy to see the field marks on the grebe, it being both larger and closer than the loon, but I could make out the white speckling on the back of the loon as well as its mostly white face and thin, upturned bill. Before Chuck arrived I had a male Redhead with a flock of about 20 Mallards but they flew shortly after I scanned them. So much easier to make out details on distant ducks under these conditions than it was 2 days earlier when I was there.
