Greetings Birders, Today was a banner "birdy day" on my deck in West Nashville's Charlotte Park, Davidson County. First, two FOS Eurasian collared doves showed up to feed for awhile, so guess those "friends" are back for the season. Next, surprise of surprises, a pair of purple finches (late?) were devouring sunflower seeds from my deck only five feet away from where I am sitting in my dining room. They were absolutely clean and gorgeous in their lovely new "spring clothes" and were obviously ready for courting. They fed and fed, giving me ample time to enjoy their beauty. He was soooo deep reddish-purple that he reminded me of the nesters I had seen in the far north during springs past. Her striping patterns were well defined unlike how blended together they get after breeding season. After eating for quite a few minutes, they flew together down to the bushes along my driveway. I suspect they'll leave for the far northland tonight, perhaps after a rest in the bushes and maybe another trip to gorge on "Dee's Smorgabird." It's a real treat to see them this late in the season when they are all decked out in their new, spring finery. Love 'em. Dee Thompson Nashville, TN
