On Saturday, 11 January, a SY male Golden Eagle was brought to the Mid-South Raptor Center after being found unable to fly at the Lower Hatchie NWR in Lauderdale County, TN. The bird had clenched feet, a sign of lead poisoning. Initial examinations by Dr. David Hannon of Memphis Veterinary Specialists found no evidence of lead in the GI track, and there were no signs of any other injury. Blood was drawn and a sample sent to the lab at Michigan State University in Lansing for analysis. Unfortunately the bird died during the night. The analysis of the blood found that the bird had a lead level of 3.0 ppm (parts per million). Anything above a level of .2 ppm causes lead toxicosis, so this bird probably never had a chance.
