Gibson County

This morning while driving to work I passed the Cultra Turf Specialists
Humboldt Sod Farm (located on Windy City Road just south of Humboldt) and
noticed an unusually large concentration of Killdeer. I didn't have time to
look through them this morning so this afternoon on the way home I pulled
off, put the scope on the window and began scanning and counting. Amongst
the hordes (600+!) Killdeer were three Buff-breasted Sandpipers and a single
Pectoral Sandpiper.

This is a relatively new sod farm that was converted from a large cotton
field a little over a year ago. This past winter and spring it completely
flooded out at least three times as it's very near the Forked Deer River.
When flooded the area attracted Bonaparte's and Ring-biled Gulls and several
species of waterfowl. With the rains that we've had recently there are a
couple of shallow pools out in the middle of the grass and some mud flats
with a little water along the dirt roads on the farm. The Pec was in one of
the shallow pools but the Buffies were walking around in the grass with the
hundreds of Killdeer, Since I pass this spot twice a day 5 days a week I
will definitely have to check this spot a little closer a little more often!
Hopefully the birds today were a sign of good things to come.

Good birding,

Mark Greene
