On a similar note, the Golden-crowned Kinglets arrived in the yard (west Knox Co) in force today (20 Oct). I had heard one on Sunday but could never get a look at it. At one point this morning, two of the kinglets were facing off on a Blackgum branch with crowns fully raised, bobbing and hopping and, perhaps coincidentally, pooping several times. Presumedly males though neither showed obvious orange in the crown, just yellow. They faced off like this for several minutes occassionally changing to a different branch but always facing each other and continuously bobbbing and hopping and pooping (seriously, they pooped several time during all this). Even stranger, twice a titmouse came over and got between them looking like a referee in a boxing match. The titmouse would chatter and flutter its wings a bit, look around then 'step back out of the ring'. Perhaps it thought they were mobbing something and came to investigate but in my mind it was coming over to say, 'Alright guys, break it up. Now touch wings and let's have a good clean fight.' Also of note, 3rd day for the seed-eating Ovenbird.
