[TN-Bird] [Fwd:Re:[Fwd:Brown-headed Nuthathch - yes!]] and nighthawks in Farragut

YES, Rick, I blanched with horror when I realized what I had posted; I
almost always read TNBird in the morning before coffee or very late at
night. (Well, I got the "nuthatch" part correct.......) :O

Last evening, in Farragut (western-most suburb of Knoxville), I watched
a tiny, single-engine plane pulling slow turns around the same thermal
as 2 feeding nighthawks. The bullbats seemed quite unworried and would
swing wide of the plane's wings, roll down and out of the wingwash, jink
back into the heart of the thermal, and resume feeding until the plane
returned in its circuit. So casual and lazy, different species of flying
creatures sharing airspace, an aerial summer scene. Cool.

Liz,
Two corrections to your post.

1). There are NO Brown-headed Nuthatches at Carver's Gap or elsewhere
on
Roan Mtn. You must mean RED-BREASTED Nuthatch, which is common in the
spruce - fir forest on Roan.

2). Carver's Gap & the rest of the Roan Mtn highlands are in National
Forests (Cherokee in TN & Pisgah in NC) and are NOT part of Roan Mtn.
State
Park, which is located at the foot of Roan Mtn. (This is a common
mistake.)

Hope this clarifies matters.
Respectfully,
