Do these juvenile Am crows repeat the same call over and over, as Fish crows seem to do, or do they toss in some nasal, "fishy" vocalizations along with more characteristic Am-crowy calls? And do fish crows have the range of click, frog calls, and mews that Am crows have or do they stick to that "unh-anh" call? I'm still on the fence on this one. Here's what Mike Roedel (our current State Ornithologist) had to say: Dev, I've tracked down fish crow vocalizations in suspect locations on a few occasions only to find juvenile American crows guilty of the calls. During the past three winters in New Mexico, I had as many as 250 crows at one time coming to my yard in the mornings to feed on chicken scratch. There were a few of them that had extremely odd vocalizations and were recognizable upon their return each year. A couple of that bunch were fluent in fish crow.
