You should have been at my house in Roane County on Saturday! As the last co= lors of a lovely sunset were fading, two Chuck-will's-widows began what I as= sume was a territorial battle (rather than a very aggressive mating ritual) = 40 feet from my deck, barely visible against the evening sky=2E=20 One CWW began calling from a fallen snag that projects about 10 feet horizon= tally from the edge of my woods (a dead red oak that used to house a pair of= Hairy WPs before it fell)=2E Another joined him in what I first thought mig= ht be a mating duet then decided must be competitive calling=2E CWW#2 finall= y touched down on the snag less than 3 ft from CWW #1, whereupon they yelled= their syrinxes out at each other so loudly that my ears rang=2E CWW #2 laun= ched forcefully toward #1, wings outstretched in an arc, rolled 90 degrees w= ith respect to the ground so that I could see the top surfaces of his head, = wings, back, and tail=2E #1 rose to meet #2 a few inches off the top of the = snag=2E They struck one another with what looked to be considerable force, s= omehow making a very sharp CLACK! as loud as a heron's beak-snap (how do the= y generate that sound?), then began making a very low bullfrog-croak that I'= ve heard from Bullbats, and calling even more loudly=2E The skirmishing brou= ght them to within 25 feet of me, although it was too dark to see them once = they were no longer silhouetted against the twilight sky=2E They went from t= ree to tree to ground to tree through the yard until CWW #2 left, whereupon = #1 returned to the snag an resumed singing=2E Too bad I forgot to press the "Record" button on my new palmcorder=2E I must= admit I sat down and bawled in self-frustration=2E=2E=2E Happy nesting season!
