A gentleman phoned me today to tell me about a huge crow roost in Knoxville.
It has to be the one referred to by Charlie Muise and Carole Gobert. He
estimated about 2,000 crows at the roost by counting about 50 crows per tree
and then multiplying that by the number of trees - apparently similarly sized
old trees. He said it was an incredible sight to see them flying in from all
over the place. There is a small field nearby with 40 or 50 cows. This field
is sometimes solid black with crows feeding in it. If you want to take a look
at this fascinating scene, go between 5 and 6 P.M. when the crows fly in from
different directions. They fly out in the mornings at first light about 6:30
A.M.

The roost is located on Third Creek Road between Middlebrook Pike and Western
Avenue. This is the road that runs up the hill by the tank farm just west of
the Knoxville Utility Board's Middlebrook Pike facility. Third Creek Road is
west of where 640 crosses Middlebrook and east of the Post Office at
Middlebrook and Weisgarber. Look for a Weigel's store. Turn onto Third Creek
Road, go up the hill, cross the railroad tracks and start looking. Near the
intersection of Third Creek Rd. and Hinton Rd.(which continues on to Western
Ave.) is an old water station building with a parking lot where you can park
for a view. There are also thousands of starlings chattering as they fly
through on their way to a different roost.
