Shelby Bottoms
Radnor Lake
Davidson Co.

Phillip Casteel and I birded phase 3 of Shelby Bottoms this morning to see
if the Fox Sparrows had returned yet. We had 7 species of sparrows, including
3-4 Fox Sparrows, one of them singing nicely. Others encountered were
Field, Song, Swamp, White-crowned, White-throated and Towhee. NTOS will have
a
field trip to this spot on November 17.

The Surf Scoter, seen yesterday at Radnor Lake, was still present late this
afternoon. Valerie Brust and I enjoyed watching it for 45 minutes as the sun
went down and the reflections on the water were gorgeous. It started
bathing, splashing quite a bit, then preened a little and finally tucked its
head
under its back feathers for the evening. It was in the company of 1 Horned
Grebe out from Grassy Point a bit towards the road. Other waterfowl remained
the same as yesterday, except that the Northern Pintail had left. We also had
our FOS Hermit Thrush along the road.
