At Fort Loudon Dam, Loudon County, TN, Saturday evening, July 7 (6pm - 7:45) there were still 4 active GREAT BLUE HERON nests on the two pylons across the river (2 on each) with 9 great blues standing on them. All were large (adult sized) but I couldn't remember how to tell the adults from the immatures and couldn't see some of them well enough to tell in any case. They were sharing the pylons with vultures. 40 BLACK VULTURES and 4 TURKEY VULTURES either on the pylons or on the ground below them. The hersons and vultures ignored each other. I counted a total of at least 19 GREAT BLUE HERONS at the dam and 16 BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERONS (including 1 juvenile). Many of the black crowns were standing along the bottom of the spillway, others were in the air and one was perched atop a dead tree. A few DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS (at least 2, perhaps as many as 5), 3 OSPREYS, 11 CANADA GEESE, 16 BARN SWALLOWS and at least 2 CLIFF SWALLOWS were also seen above or on the water. It was very pleasant, cool with a nice breeze, so I lingered.
