I took my kayak out on TN River late Saturday afternoon (April 22) and
paddled past UT Plant Sciences Farm and the airport referenced in Morton
Massey¹s Friday post. Was hoping to see the Caspian and Forster¹s Terns,
but there was a fair amount of boat traffic, combination of fisherman and
UT Orange and White game. When I first went out, I saw cormorants perched
on the logs between Plant Sciences and the airport, but no terns.
On my way back about 1.5 hrs later (~4:30 pm) I saw a Forster¹s Tern in
flight over the main channel, then two larger white birds on one of the
logs. On closer approach I found the birds on the log were first-year
Bonaparte¹s Gulls. The Forster¹s Tern eventually came in and landed as
well. I¹ll post photos on e-bird.
Also saw two Prothonatary Warblers, 3 Osprey nests within about 1/2 mile
stretch of river, and an adult Bald Eagle.

Subject: [TN-Bird] Caspian and Forster Terns in Knox County
There are presently 3 Caspian and 1 Forster Terns on some logs in the
Tennessee River at the small grass airport on Alcoa hwy in Knox county.
The airport is open to the public. You can drive around the landing
strip and park at the small playground.
