Ralph and Kay,
This is an exciting record for Kansas... or just about anywhere outside
of south Texas. There is actually one fork-tailed flycatcher on the
Kansas Bird Records Committee Review List, but it is listed as
hypothetical. I have forwarded your observation to the secretary of the
Kansas Bird Record Committee, Dave Rintoul at drintoul@xxxxxxx . For
more information about the Kansas Ornithological Society and Kansas

Ralph and Kay had a terrific trip to Quivera and Cheyenne Bottoms this
month.
The highlight was a fork-tailed flycatcher, independently observed by
us both

as follows:
I am not sure if this is important enough for someone there to be
interested.

While birding at Quivera/Cheyenne the last two weks we both
(independently)
observed a fork-tailed flycatcher. The details are as follows:
Wednesday April 21, 8.25 AM. Sunny day. Mile marker 194, at the
junction of
Hwy. 50 and hwy. 281, St. John, Kansas (Stafford Co.). Ralph drove to a

store,
saw bird cross road in flight, settle on wire and turn face front.
Returning
to camp, immediately identified bird using Sibley.9.30 AM, sent Kay to

independently check. She observed bird from stopped car with binoculars
and
confir,ed
ID. As it happens, a pair of scissor tail flycatchers and a Loggerhead
Shrike

were in the same vicinity, the only even possible misidentifications.
10.30
both failed to see the bird again. There had been continous heavy south
winds

for several days, and a very severe gale on Sunday April 18, 2004.

Credentials: Both birders for life ( Kay 62, Ralph 71), Kay VP of local
bird
club, Ralph birded on 6 Continents, US life list over 400, retired
professional biologist.

It might be useful for this info. to be forwarded to Kansas contacts
(we have

none).

The other notables were very large numbers of pelicans, ruddy ducks and
eared

grebes. Wilson's phallarope (feeding and copulating, confirms the
females are

the showy ones!) Brewer's sparrow, and several other life birds for us
both.
We saw 117 species plus 1 ostrich.
