July 11, 2007 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co, TN Well I finally made it to the pits, the stormy weather did it's thing. There were 12 species of shorebirds this afternoon. The water left in the dry pits did it's thing bringing in 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, 1 Willet, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 11 Lesser Yellowlegs, 16 Semipalmated Sandpiper, 1 Western Sandpiper, 6 Solitary Sandpipers and 3 Spotted Sandpipers. Least Sandpipers flooded the area with 476 in one pit along with 21 Pectoral Sandpipers and the standby Killdeers. Black-necked Stilts were really up in the air, I mean seriously bombarding a Great Blue Heron. At one time, 4 Black-necks were swirling around the heron. I've got a few photos but very distant. I've seen Great Blue Herons snatch up and eat Least, Semipalmated and even one Pectoral Sandpiper so the baby Blacknecks would be a fine snack. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
